BECKWITH - A local humane society is hoping to raise $1,000 every month to help pay for veterinarian bills.

Beth Powers with the New River Humane Society recently started an online fundraiser to provide medical care for sick and injured shelter animals. So far, the society made $890 in online donations and received a $280 check. This money will pay for last month's procedures.

Powers said the shelter has high medical care needs each month and the animals are euthanized if these needs cannot be addressed. "Sometimes it could be as simple as an antibiotic or anything like that that could save their lives," she said. "We don't want to see any dog euthanized just due to illness or injury."

Folk can donate online or send checks to P.O. Box 955 in Fayetteville. Volunteers are also needed to help out at the shelter.
