JEWELL RIDGE - An empty coal train headed to Grundy, Virginia derailed in Tazewell County.
The Tazewell County Sheriff's Department said the train left the tracks Tuesday in Jewell Ridge. Norfolk Southern Spokesman Robin Chapman said no injuries were reported and no hazardous materials spilled. Chapman said seven of the locomotive's 179 cars derailed.
Crews hoped to clear the tracks by Wednesday, but in the meantime, motorists between Jewell Ridge and Richlands were asked to seek alternate routes.
The derailment's cause remained under investigation.
