BECKLEY - Raleigh County commissioners voted Tuesday to start the process of consolidating three water Public Service Districts (PSDs).

Commission President Dave Tolliver said they decided at the commission meeting to move forward in combining the PSDs of Cool Ridge/Ghent, Glen White/Trap Hill and Raleigh County. Tolliver said now it is up to the Public Service Commission in Charleston to do a financial audit to determine whether it makes economic sense to merge all three.

More than 9,000 customers would be serviced under the consolidation, according to Tolliver. "Our main objective is try to get water and sewer to as many people as possible in Raleigh County," he said. "Face it: if you don't have water, you're hurting. So our main objective is infrastructure."

He says the audit will be time-consuming and could take more than a year to complete.
