BECKLEY - Do you want emergency notifications about Raleigh County on your smartphone or tablet? Soon there will be an app for that!

The app is called "Heads Up Beckley." City Emergency Services Director Kevin Taylor said users of the free app will be able access information about school closings, traffic jams and accidents, health and safety concerns, power outages and more. The application is being modeled after "Heads Up Huntington," the first app of its kind to provide residents with emergency notifications from several agencies.

Taylor said he learned about this app last year and applied for a grant to develop it, after which the city was awarded $30,000. He said the app will be another way to share important information in a timely manner.

"It's going to provide broad-scale coverage for numerous disciplines and entities that chose to take part, and share that information in a timely manner with our citizens," he explained.

Taylor said the free app should be ready to download by June or July. It will be available for Android and iPhone users.
