BECKLEY - A Raleigh County Woman was sentenced to two to thirteen years behind bars after prosecutors said she left her twin boys alone with a her new husband, who authorities said was high.

Brandy Smallwood, 28, faces two consecutive sentences for child neglect resulting in serious bodily injury and child neglect causing bodily injury. These sentences stemmed from the death of her two-year-old child and the beating of his twin brother. Smallwood also received a permanent restraining order and can't be around any children, including her own, for the rest of her life.

Smallwood’s twin boys were beaten by husband James Green last February while Smallwood left the home to pay a drug dealer, according to Prosecuting Attorney Kristen Keller. Authorities found Green passed out from an apparent drug overdose and one of the babies unresponsive.

Keller said the situation was heartbreaking. “Anytime children are killed or beaten it just breaks everyone's heart, particularly since there's so many good people that would love to have given a good home to those little boys,” she explained.

If Smallwood is granted parole, she must register as a child abuser, according to Keller. Smallwood received the maximum allowable sentence and remains in Southern Regional Jail.
