SMITHERS – A home is destroyed in Fayette County this afternoon leaving a mother and her 2-year-old with no place to go.
Firefighters were called to the 200 block of Long Acre Way in Smithers just after 1 p.m. this afternoon for a fully involved structure fire.
Roger Bowlas is a neighbor who witnessed the fire.
“I live right there and before I even got to it… The smoke... I couldn't see nothing. So I had to turn around and tell my wife to call 911, that it was the neighbor's house that was on fire.”
Fire officials say it was a three-alarm fire, and the heat was so intense that it force firefighters to back away from the blaze and just try to contain it.
“Crews made entry, then the fire kept extending on us, then we pulled them back out and did a defensive attack and we knocked it down from there,” says Michael Giannini of the Smithers Fire Dept.
Nobody was hurt but the home was a total loss. No word on what caused it but officials continue to investigate.
