BECKLEY - Organizers in Raleigh County joined their fellow agencies, nationwide, by kicking off an annual event on Thursday.
American Cancer Society employees and volunteers said cancer is something everyone can relate to. They met on Thursday to officially begin the fundraising season for the Relay For Life program. The location of their kickoff celebration was dressed up in purple, the relay's official color, in order to show the area's support. Staff members and volunteers were eager to brainstorm ideas, hear from other agencies nationwide, and excite this community about how they can get involved. The goal is to find a cure for cancer, and this event will bring funding to the cause, and fun to anyone participating.
"Sometimes it's the medicine that you can't put in a bottle that makes all the difference and it's that hope that we can give to others that can make all the difference in the world when you're starting your cancer journey," said Relay For Life specialist, Melanie Meachum.
For anyone interested in getting a team together, organizers will be holding a captains meeting on January 27th at 6 PM at the American Cancer Society.
