UPDATE:

VIVIAN - Sixteen freight train cars, including two tankers, derailed in McDowell County on Friday morning.

The accident happened around 8:30 a.m., according to Norfolk Southern Rail Spokesman Robin Chapman. He said a train approximately 7,000 feet long consisting of three locomotives at the head end, 111 freight cars and two locomotives at the rear - hauling a variety of commodities - was traveling eastbound when it derailed near Vivian.

911 Dispatch Center Spokesman John Sidote said a tanker car went into Elkhorn Creek. Sidote said the car ruptured and is leaking liquid asphault so crews are trying to contain it. The other tanker is over the embankment, according to Sidote.

On the scene now are the McDowell County Emergency Ambulance Authority, Welch and Kimball Fire Departments, Northfork Southern Police and Hazmat Team. Officials said the DEP Hazmat team in Charleston and the Norfolk Southern Personnel and contractors have been contacted for assistance.

The line is double tracked and both tracks are closed, according to Chapman. Route 52 remains open to traffic but there is no estimate yet on when train traffic will resume. Stick with Newswatch for updates.
