Hundreds dump for free at county landfill Thursday

BECKLEY - A steady stream of cars and trucks rolled through the landfill Thursday to ditch their trash before the start of the new year.

The Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority hosted its once-a-month free dump day at the landfill. Users are normally charged $4 per car, $10 per truck or $42 dollars for a ton of trash, but on Thursday bags of trash were dumped for free.

Solid Waste Authority officials also encouraged consumers to be environmentally responsible.

"It makes the world happy when you recycle," Sherri Hunter told WOAY. "You're just not throwing away something that's going to be there forever, and you're being a steward of the land. We don't want it to be there forever. You want to be able to preserve that landfill air space, and it's just the right thing to do."

The landfill is also accepting live Christmas trees through Feb. 1 when they'll be recycled and converted into mulch piles.
