WELCH - A 51,000 pound attack-resistant vehicle is now a part of the fleet over at the McDowell County Sheriff's Department.

The department recently acquired a Mine Resistant Ambush Protection armored personnel carrier from the military, according to officials. The vehicle is equipped with bullet-resistant tires and windows, has six-wheel drive and can transport eleven people. The vehicle is capable of crossing waterways, reaching isolated households and approaching barricaded suspects.

Sergeant James Muncy said the department obtained the vehicle through the federal Law Enforcement Support Office, which gives away surplus equipment rather than scrapping or storing it. The federal government could reclaim the vehicle in the event of a national emergency.
