OAK HILL - Several Oak Hill freshmen are volunteering their time to help shelter dogs and cats.

Students are making collars, chew toys and blankets for the New River Humane Society as part of a community service project for a special class designed to help freshmen develop their skills and interests.

Tana Higginbotham, the teacher of the LINKS class doing this project, said she hopes it encourages students to volunteer their time outside of the classroom to help others. “I want them to be proud of their contribution and I hope that this continues, this feeling of helping out, being a part of a community,” she said.

The community service project will continue throughout the school year.
