BECKLEY - Caterpillar Inc. will close a highwall miner plant in Raleigh County and move it's productions to a facility in Pennsylvania.
The company announced the move Monday. Caterpillar said it's plant in Beckley will close by mid-2014. Production will be shifted to the company's plant in Houston, Pa. The Beckley plant employed about 40 workers. Caterpillar said those employees will be offered a severance package and transitional support.
Company spokeswoman Barbara Cox said that Caterpillar needed to make it's underground mining business more efficient and competitive.
