SCARBRO - The New River Health Center began offering pulmonary rehabilitation services Friday.
The Grace Anne Dorney Pulmonary Rehabilitation Center at New River Health in Scarbro officially opened its doors to patients suffering from chronic lung diseases. It has been months of preparations since the center received the funding in July, according to Dr. Dan Doyle, medical director of the pulmonary rehabilitation center. The center has been screening patients since August and about 20 patients qualify so far.
Doyle said lung disease is a big problem in the mountain state because of occupational exposure and the high rate of smoking, so he hopes the new center raises awareness. "I'm real excited that this is drawing greater attention to early diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary diseases," he said.
Primary funders Grace Anne Dorney and Ted Koppel met with the patients. Dorney, who is suffering from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, spoke about how rehabilitation improved her health. Dorney and Koppel helped fund a total of three pulmonary rehabilitation clinics in the mountain state.
