BECKLEY - Three areas including Beckley are no longer eligible for a federal program that subsidizes home loans for low-income residents.
It's because Beckley is now considered a metropolitan statistical area based on data from the 2010 Census. That makes the city ineligible for the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Rural Development Subsidized Housing Loan Program.
The population cutoff is 10,000 residents, and Beckley's population was recorded at 17,614 three years ago.
The changes are effective as of October 1, 2013.
