BECKLEY – Open enrollment begins in less than one week for the Affordable Care Act, which is designed to make health care more accessible and affordable for the uninsured.
The enrollment process begins October 1 and ends March 31. Starting as early as January, the new insurance plans, which include Medicaid Expansion and the Health Insurance Marketplace, will be available.
18 percent of West Virginians are uninsured and 93 percent of those people may qualify for tax credits or Medicaid through the expansion, according to WVAHC officials, so the overhaul is estimated to affect about 250,000 West Virginians.
People who already have insurance will be unaffected, according to WVAHC officials, although they said the Affordable Care Act may eventually lead to lower insurance premiums all-around.
Enrollment will take place beginning October 1 online at www.HealthCare.gov and by phone at 800-318-2596.
