GLEN DANIEL - A Raleigh County teacher already honored for his achievements is awarded $5,000 for his work again.
Theater, band and music appreciation teacher Everett Jeremy Rodriguez was honored at his own Liberty High School by Roy Lee Cook and The Prodigy Foundation.
"I like to tell people that I get up every morning, and I stand next to my truck, and I give thanks to God that I have the coolest job in the world," Rodriguez told Newswatch. "I get to work in an excellent school -- it says so on the building. I work with a great faculty and I have wonderful students."
Rodriguez was previously named the winner of the Great American Teach Off, but on Wednesday he received a grant for his work.
Rodriguez's students had nothing but good words to say about their teacher.
"He's not just a teacher," senior Emily Smith said through tears. "He's a friend, and he's been a friend to all of us for as long as I've been here."
He says he's lucky and thankful to be doing what he loves.
"I get to come here everyday, so yeah there's no where else I'd really rather want to be," he said.
Rodriguez plans to spend the $5,000 on a car that will haul a trailer of band instruments.
