DUNBAR - West Virginia State Police officials created a program to put already qualified officers on the fast-track to becoming troopers.
Col. "Jay" Smithers said the Accelerated Cadet Program was intended to address manpower issues by getting cadets into the field faster. The program involved eleven weeks of training at the State Police Academy, compared to the usual 25. Applicants must also have successfully completed the basic program there.
Smithers said this new accelerated program allowed qualified prospects to skip over training they went through in the basic courses and gets more troopers in the field faster.
