UPDATE:

PRINCETON - Two people were arrested in connection to Monday's fatal shooting just outside of Princeton.

Mercer County Deputies told Newswatch that Latasha Kanode, 23, of Princeton, and Steven McDonald, 32, of Bluefield, were taken into custody.  The two are each charged with first-degree murder, first-degree robbery, burglar, conspiracy and attempted murder.

The shooting happened around 5:30 a.m. Monday at an apartment building on Thornton Avenue in Lilly Grove.  Sherry Matthews, 44, of Princeton was killed. Edward Thomas, 41, of Princeton, was released from the hospital after he was treated for a gunshot wound to the chin, according to deputies.

Kanode and McDonald appeared in court Tuesday, where Judge Derek Swope decided the two will be held in Southern Regional Jail without bond.

Neighbors said the situation is shocking. "You think you're safe - you are safe - but these things can happen," explained Wayne Brown. "I'm still in unbelief that it happened this close to home."

Kanode and McDonald will appear in court again on July 19. The Sherifff's Department continues to investigate this incident.
