Morrisey warns residents of social media scam

CHARLESTON - Attorney General Patrick Morrisey warned residents about a scam that's carried out on social media accounts.

Morrisey said residents have asked his office whether offers to give them thousands of dollars are legitimate, but he said they're not.  According to Morrisey, the messages appear to come from "friends" who say they just received a large sum of money from a federal agent who represents an empowerment program.  The messages encourage the reader to click a link that adds that agent as a friend, then offers to give $50,000 to $150,000 in exchange for a shipping fee paid with a wire transfer service.

Morrisey said consumers should be wary of free money that comes out of nowhere or requires a fee.
