CHARLESTON - The amount of Americans seeking unemployment benefits last week decreased by several thousand.

The Labor Department said applications for unemployment aid fell 7,000, which is near the five-year lows reached in January. Americans seeking this aid dropped to a seasonally adjusted 340,000. Officials said a fall in these weekly applications suggests companies are shedding fewer jobs, and that more hiring may follow.

The report on February job growth will be released Friday.
