Police departments across the state are conducting DUI sobriety checkpoints the night of New Year's Eve.

Officers will be on the lookout for drunk drivers, underage drinking, and folks driving with suspended or revoked driver's licenses.

Beckley Police said the checkpoints are in place to promote safe driving. "We just want to make sure everyone has a safe and happy holidays," said Captain Jeff Schumate. "And by having these checkpoints, we hope we can convince people to have a designated driver."

Schumate said drinking and driving rates increase during holiday seasons, like New Year's Eve and Day.
