FAYETTEVILLE – Fayette County schools move a step closer to gaining control of its education.

The West Virginia Board of Education voted unanimously to return partial control to the county related to school policies.

Officials visited the county in June to determine the degree of compliance and progress made regarding policy deficiencies.

The Fayette Co. school system had been under close scrutiny by the state board since 1999, and in 2007 the county was placed on non-approval status before the state intervened in 2010.

The state cited serious curriculum and facilities problems within the Fayette Co. system, and in order for those issues to be corrected the state took control of the entire county system.

Now with significant progress, the local board is regaining some control.
