MERCER COUNTY - Two Mercer County brothers were cited for misdemeanor charges this weekend.

Law enforcement officials who cited two Mercer County brothers for staging cockfights, said they seized 6 injured roosters and more than 150 birds on Saturday night. Police said they cited 43 year old Stacey Brown and 45 year old Gilbert Brown for hosting an illegal venture. Three others were cited for attending the cockfight. The weekend bust was near Oakvale. Cockfighting materials such as spurs were also confiscated. The injured birds suffered from punctures and gashes. A Humane Officer in Mercer County, Tracy Monninger, said this is an ongoing problem, but citing those involved is difficult due to the underground nature of these operations.

"It just seems pretty steady. I know that it's been an ongoing thing for many years. There's plenty of it going on in Mercer County; this is the first time we've had a successful raid of any of them but it is pretty prevalent in the county," said Monninger.

Mercer County Humane Society officials sais these birds are being stored in separate crates to keep them from fighting.
